Israel’s Top 8 Sufganiyot
Chanukah is right around the corner and, let’s face it, we’ll be surrounded by food once again. In Jewish holiday fashion: they tried to kill us, we survived, let’s eat (and you don’t have to ask us twice). Chanukah is a particularly special time of year because – you guessed it – sufganiyot.
Israelis have mastered the art of the sufganiya and are not shy to try new variations. Below are 8 of the best sufganiyot and where to find them if you’re spending the holiday in Israel.
1) The Baba Au Rhum One
Oh, Roladin. Where would we be without you? The sufganiyot (and basically all the other baked goods) that come out of this place are nothing short of magical. Our favorite is the Baba Au Rhum, which is filled and/or topped with whipped cream, light syrup, Amarena cherries, and a rum syringe. One sufganiya done right could be all you need this Chanukah.
But who are we kidding, there are a few more.

2) The Vanilla One
Sound boring? Wrong. Dallal bakery in Neve Zedek combines two classics (sufganiyot and vanilla cream) to create a mouthwatering cloud of doughy goodness. Their other specialties include strawberry jelly, chocolate, and pistachio.

3) The Chocolate One
Where there is vanilla, there is also its evil chocolate counterpart. The Bakery (so good they don’t need another name) offers more classic mixes, and the chocolate sufganiya has quickly become a staple in Israeli and American-Jewish households alike.

4) The Baked One
Most sufganiyot, as delicious as they are, are deep fried in oil. Shemo Bakery decided to take a lighter twist on the Chanukah classic and bake it, making the dessert light and airy, but no less richly sweet. If you’re looking to “eat healthy” sufganiyot style, this is one of the best sufganiyot in Israel.

5) The Vegan One
Piece of Cake Bakery caters to the vegan capital of the world and even specializes in vegan sufganiyot. On their vegan menu they offer: chocolate, double jelly, white sugar, and chocolate halva. We’re going for the chocolate halva.

6) The Hamburer One
Yep, you read that correctly. The concoctions that come out of Jacob’s Bakery during the
holidays are astounding and we love each and every one of them. Unfortunately, we could only pick one, but we’re okay with the choice. The hamburger sufganiya is made up of chocolate, fruit, cream, and fluffy sufganiyot buns on either side.

7) The Tahini One
Two doozies in a row. Tatti’s Bistro starts off their holiday menu with the classics, like jelly and chocolate, and then gets a little more out of the box with their dulce de leche, vanilla citrus, and peanut butter sufganiyot, and finally tops it off with their famous tahini and white chocolate sufganiya. Put it on your to-eat list for this Chanukah.
8) The Chestnut One
If you’re missing the winter holiday season of America, where chestnuts roast on an open fire, Kadosh is the place for you. With only one location that sits in the heart of Jerusalem, this bakery has made such a big name for itself that approximately everyone knows about it. Kadosh’s menu of sufganiyot includes: dark chocolate nougat, baked with pistachio, fruit and marshmallow, pineapple and marmalade, and, our favorite, chestnut cream. (Also, they have cronuts.)
