An internationally-recognized holy religious site, the Western Wall has always adhered to strict Orthodox standards including separate prayer spaces for men and women. Progressive Jewish individuals and organizations, like the Women of the Wall, have been pushing for an egalitarian prayer space for the past 30 years where alternative Jewish services may be held. The seemingly-endless back-and-forth between the progressive Jewish movements and the government is the source of heated debates both in Israel and the Diaspora.
