A leading young Jewish activist in Mexico City, Jacobo has distinguished himself as a dynamic, energetic, and dedicated leader. His ability to inspire young members of the community has been key to creating a space where Jewish traditions and contemporary values harmoniously converge, fostering Jewish identity, education, and community engagement. He now serves as the President of the Mexican Federation of Jewish youth, which started as a small movement and today encompass all youth activities, from all backgrounds. The federation serves as the official representative of Jewish youth in Mexico’s civil and political spheres, as well as on the international stage. It sends the official Mexican Jewish youth delegations to the world Zionist congress, the American Jewish Committee Global Forum, to the World Union of Jewish students, it works with JFNA and the Mexican Jewish Community institutions and organizations. The federation has 29 different institutions, and together they represent about 5,000 young Jewish Mexicans aged 18-35.
Tell us about Your Work/project:
The initiative of leading the Mexican Federation of Jewish Youth stems from a deeply personal journey that began with my participation in the March of the Living in Poland and Israel. Witnessing the history and resilience of the Jewish people firsthand profoundly shaped my understanding of the importance of activism.
This experience inspired me to take on a leadership role. The development of this initiative involves creating programs and opportunities that celebrate Jewish heritage, promote unity, and cultivate a strong sense of belonging. By shifting the narrative from one reactive to external hate to one focused on proactive love for our identity, we aim to strengthen the ties between young Jews and Israel, ensuring that our community thrives today and for generations to come.
What is your proudest achievement?
Been being named Emerging Leader of the Year by the World Union of Jewish Students, an honor that recognizes the dedication to strengthening and uniting Jewish communities worldwide. Serving as a board member of this global organization and being elected President of the Mexican Federation of Jewish Youth has provided me with the platform to champion initiatives that inspire young Jews to embrace their heritage, build meaningful connections, and actively contribute to the well-being and continuity of our community.
How would you describe the impact of your Masa program on your life and professional path?
The Masa program profoundly impacted both my personal and professional journey. Immersing myself in Israel’s culture, history, and community gave me a deeper connection to my Jewish identity and a renewed sense of purpose. On a professional level, Masa equipped me with leadership skills, a global network, and the inspiration to take on meaningful roles within the Jewish world. The program not only shaped my vision for fostering Jewish life but also provided the tools and confidence to turn that vision into action.
Masa helped me see the vital role Israel plays in uniting Jews worldwide and inspired me to dedicate myself to fostering stronger connections between young Jews and our shared homeland.
Who is your role model?
My grandfather, Zuzu Mann, is my role model because of his extraordinary ability to embody Jewish values, especially transcendence, in the face of adversity. Born in Beirut in 1948, he grew up in a humble household and became an orphan at the age of twelve. Despite his challenging circumstances, he chose a path of resilience and purpose rather than despair, embracing life with unwavering optimism and gratitude. He saw life as a divine gift, approaching every challenge with joy, humor, and a deep commitment to his family and community. This is his legacy. Through his story, I’ve learned the importance of living with purpose, uplifting others, and embracing life’s challenges with strength and gratitude.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
In 10 years, I would love to see the impact that today’s Jewish youth leaders in Mexico have made on the next generations. It will always be an incredible honor for me to serve as a volunteer within the community, working tirelessly to achieve the goals we set together and ensuring that the values, culture, and mission of the Jewish people continue to thrive for generations to come.
At the same time, I aim to use my career as a lawyer to contribute to the community in meaningful ways. By advocating for legal protections and fighting against antisemitism, I aspire to create a safer and more equitable society for Jews and others.
I also envision forming a family of my own, raising children who are proud of their heritage and committed to carrying forward the values that define us as a people, specially through Tikun Olam, repairing this world to make it a better place.
What is your advice for young Jews around the world who want to make a difference?
As young Jews, we must remember that we are the next generation of leaders, and our voices, ideas, and concerns are just as important as those who came before us. Don’t shy away from getting involved and speaking up. Whether it’s about the direction of the community, social issues, or how we engage with the world, we all have a role to play. It’s crucial that we engage with the wisdom of our elders, but also that we bring our own perspective, energy, and creativity to the table. The future of the Jewish community is in our hands, and we should take ownership of it with passion and responsibility. So, my advice to young Jews is to never underestimate the power of your voice.
