Tel Aviv University International MA in Jewish Studies

Program Description

Tel Aviv University is proud to offer the world's only one-year intensive MA in Jewish Studies to be taught in English in a Hebrew-speaking environment.
Our new MA offers a series of intimate encounters with the classical texts of Jewish culture, from biblical to modern times. Its intellectual home is in the department of Hebrew Culture Studies at Tel Aviv University, the single largest Jewish Studies department in the world, covering central fields including Bible, Talmud and Midrash, Medieval Philosophy and Mysticism, Modern Thought and Hebrew Language.
Our new MA courses are taught by a team of dedicated lecturers, with world-class expertise in their respective fields and all utterly committed to teaching excellence.  Our courses are all text-centered, with primary texts in Hebrew (with translations), and secondary reading and teaching in English.  Our aim is to provide our students with the skills and tools that constitute the foundation of Jewish text study, whether in the university, the synagogue, church or other religious institution, for community service or for personal benefit.
We are keen to help our students to interpret the texts they study in their  cultural and historical contexts.  Tel Aviv's location provides excellent opportunities for on-site study.  Students can enhance their understanding of 1st CE texts  through a series of guided excursions to archeological digs and other key locations in the Galilee, Judean desert, and Jerusalem.
MA courses are offered in biblical theology, the history of Hebrew language, rabbinic exegesis and midrash, talmudic and Christian texts, Jewish mysticism, medieval philosophy and kabbalah, ancient Jewish magic, and modern Jewish thought. Our MA is designed to provide an excellent foundation for further graduate studies in Jewish Studies and other fields involving text work. It attracts Humanities graduates from All around the world. Its graduates are well equipped for work in Jewish and other communities and institutions, museums, and branches of education.
